Going Sinhala ||

Ah, Yesterday night I dreaded the complete destruction of my beloved 'bloggie' while I was trying to get my CMS to work with Sinhala. Apparently changing a charset of the CMS but not the database, messes stuff up.

Anyway, I wanted to get write සිංහල for some time, but there was something stopping me, most of my friends, especially non uni friends didn't have sinhala unicode installed. And most of them had no idea how to do it. :) Yeah, I have 'technically disadvantaged' friends. For prove the fact, let me just quote a telephone convo I had with a friend, who called me in the middle of the night while trying to register for some website.

  • Friend: මචන්, this thing says, type your email address and press continue, what do I do.
  • Me: ah, you have to type in your email address and press continue.
  • Friend: Great!, it's working

That is a true story, lol. So, I had to use something little more than unicode to get Sinhala working. It's a very simple and straightforward javascript based solution.
